Gateshead Thunder emerged from Widnes with pride despite Saturday's 40-18 Northern Rail Cup defeat.

Thunder ran in four tries, with a brace from Joe Arundel, but Vikings were just too strong, particularly taking control in the second-period.

Discipline also cost the visitors, with two players sent to the sin-bin on separate occasions to hand the Vikings a numerical advantage.

The final Northern Rail Cup game will be at home to Rochdale on Saturday.
