Gateshead Thunder's Northern Rail Cup campaign got off to a disappointing start with a 40-20 defeat away at Keighley Cougars on Tuesday.

Thunder led 14-12 at the break thanks to a try apiece from Ben McAlpine, Kevin Neighbour and Stewart Sanderson.

However a second-half collapse saw the hosts run in five tries, with just one from Luke Branighan in reply.

Thunder's next game will be Sunday's visit of Sheffield Eagles to Gateshead in the Northern Rail Cup.
