Keighley snap up half-back Evans

Rugby League

Championship One side Keighley Cougars have signed Australian half-back Daniel Evans on a one-year contract.

The 24-year-old has played for the Tweed Head Seagulls in the Queensland Cup competition and is a dual-contract player with the Gold Coast Titans.

"It has been an ambition of mine to play rugby league in England at some stage in my career and this is a great opportunity for me," said Evans.

"I'm looking forward to working with Barry Eaton and the Cougars players."

Evans has played representative rugby league for Gold Coast and Northern Rivers in the Country Rugby League.

He also played club rugby for Brisbane's Wynnum Manly.

"Some of my mates have been playing with British clubs and they have told me about the game over here," said Evans.

"They have said that playing standards have improved and that it's really enjoyable."

Cougars coach Barry Eaton said: "It is always good to acquire quality players for the Cougars squad.

"We have set ourselves tough targets for 2009 and we shall need an in-depth squad for what is expected to be an exacting campaign.

"Daniel comes to Keighley well recommended and I'm sure he will be a success with our club," he added.

Evans will link up with his new team-mates for the first time when the Cougar players report back for pre-season training on Tuesday.
