Workington Town have signed scrum-half Stephen Roper from Widnes Vikings on a one-year deal.

Roper, 21, comes in as a replacement for Liam Campbell who joined rivals Barrow Raiders last month.

He made 13 appearances for Widnes in National One last season and figured in September's 48-18 reserve grade Grand Final win against Halifax.

He has also been on the books of Super League sides Wigan and Warrington Wolves before joining Widnes in 2007.
