Vikings strengthen squad for 2009

Widnes Vikings

Widnes Vikings have awarded new contracts to stand-offs Lee Paterson and Tim Hartley for the 2009 season.

Paterson, 27, is a Scotland international and scored 14 tries for Vikings in 26 appearances last season.

Hartley, 22, endured an injury hit season but was still a player head coach Steve McCormack wanted to keep.

"Tim has had his injury problems during 2008 but when fit has shown what a talented player he is as well as a prolific goal-kicker," said McCormack.

Vikings have announced Gavin Dodd and Jim Gannon, who were already contracted until the end of the 2009 season, will be in next season's squad.

And the club's decision to retain the services of 26-year-old winger Dodd and prop Gannon, 31, was met with delight by McCormack.

"Gavin and Jim have both had exceptional seasons," he added.

"Gavin has scored some important tries as well as picking up the try of the season award while Jim has led by example week-in, week-out."

Meanwhile John Duffy and Richard Fletcher have both extended their contracts for 12 months and will continue to work with the Vikings in their community department.
