Featherstone Rovers have appointed former Great Britain international Daryl Powell as their new coach.

The 43-year-old former Leeds Rhinos coach takes over from David Hobbs, who parted company with the club in June.

A club statement said: "The club is delighted to have been able to appoint a coach with such an impressive professional record."

Powell, who won 33 Great Britain caps, also had spells with Sheffield Eagles, Leeds and Keighley

He returned to Headingley to coach the Rhinos in 2001 steering them to the Challenge Cup final in Cardiff in 2003.

At the end of 2003 he moved to a new role of director of rugby following the appointment of Tony Smith.

In July 2005 he switched codes to work alongside Phil Davies with the then Leeds Tykes.

He was initially brought in as attack coach under Davies but then became first-team coach, a role he also enjoyed when Stuart Lancaster took over from Davies.

Following the arrival of new director of rugby Andy Key and head coach Neil Back, Powell moved into a newly created position of assistant backs & skills coach.

However his final game with the club came on Saturday with Leeds Carnegie's win at Exeter.

Leeds Rugby chief executive Gary Hetherington said: "Daryl has been an outstanding servant.

"Daryl has always been the ultimate team player and he leaves with our best wishes. We wish him well at Featherstone and his future coaching career."
