Barrow Raiders coach Dave Clark admitted he was disappointed with the response of his players after their 15-10 loss to Hunslet on Sunday.
The defeat to the National League Two strugglers ended Raiders' 100% record and Clark believes his squad may have underestimated the task ahead of them.
"Mentally I think we struggled maybe because they weren't where we are in the table," he told BBC Radio Cumbria.
"Physically we were here, mentally we weren't and that let us down."
Clark was, however, impressed with the performance of full-back Mike Backhouse who was drafted in to fill the role usually occupied by injury victim Andrew Beattie.
"He played well and returned the ball well for us," said Clark.
"There were a couple of decisions with the high ball, but he played well overall and it was good for him to get out there and play football."
