Wakefield (12) 30 Tries: Martin, Pitts, Blaymire, Blanch 2 Goals: Brough (5)
Wigan (14) 38 Tries: Hock, Hansen, Richards, Colbon, Coley, Leuluai Goals: Richards (7)
Wigan Warriors scored six tries to secure a hard-earned victory over Wakefield at Belle Vue. The visitors led 14-12 at half-time after tries from Thomas Leuluai and Andy Coley, with Wakefield responding through Damien Blanch and Jay Pitts. Second-half efforts from Gareth Hock, Harrison Hansen, Pat Richards and Liam Colbon gave Wigan the advantage. And though Wakefield responded through Blanch, Tony Martin and Matt Blaymire, Wigan held on for victory. Hock in particular was superb for Wigan putting in another man-of-the-match performance in front of the watching England coach Tony Smith. Forward Hock scored one try and made a mountain of yards in attack as the Warriors warmed up nicely for next weekend's Challenge Cup trip to Leeds.
Wakefield coach John Kear: "There were many plus points but we have got to learn about our discipline. "From half-time to 70 minutes we conceded six penalties to nil, and that's when the scoreboard really changed. "But we were down to our last 17, and there is only Sean O'Loughlin to come into Wigan's strongest team. "To show we can be so competitive when we're so depleted is very heartening." Wigan coach Brian Noble:
"This time last year we got thumped here, around about the same time, so it's good to come away with the points. "This is a very difficult place to come and play, because they scrap and they gouge - and that's not a disrespectful thing to say, because they are always in your face, trying to find a reason to score points. "They were missing a load of players but whoever shows up and plays for them is tough."
