Jones was a hugely influential player for the Kiwis |
New Zealand coach Stephen Kearney has called former captains Stacey Jones and Ruben Wiki into the coaching set-up for the Test against Australia on 9 May. Jones, 31, last played for his country in the 2006 Tri-Nations and retired from playing last September after two seasons with Catalans Dragons. "To be able to work with the Kiwis in this way will be brilliant," he said. "I was thrilled when Steve asked. If he thinks I can help, I'm only too pleased to be involved." Jones, who represented his country 46 times, is now working with the half-backs and kickers at the New Zealand Warriors, the team for which he made 238 appearances. Wiki, 35, is in his 16th and final season in Australia's National Rugby League and plans to play in Super League before he retires. Kearney will take charge of the team for the first time for the match in May, which is being played 100 years to the day from the first meeting between the teams, and both sides will play in 1908 colours. Kearney was appointed coach in February this year, replacing Gary Kemble, whose reign lasted just five months. Veteran former Australia coach Wayne Bennett will work alongside Kearney and could also be involved for the World Cup later in the year.
