Warrington: (0) 6 Tries: Johnson Goals: Hicks Harlequins: (8) 8 Tries: Haggerty Goals: Paul (2) Harlequins inflicted Warrington's first home defeat of the season as they triumphed in dreadful conditions. An abysmal pitch made flowing rugby impossible, the only try of the first half coming when Gareth Haggerty intercepted a Warrington pass. With 11 minutes left, Paul Johnson put Warrington on the scoreboard and the goal cut the gap to two points. Warrington piled everything into attack but when Andy Bracek knocked-on, their last chance of victory slipped away. Even before the game had begun the pitch was already a quagmire, and once the match got underway the conditions further deteriorated. Warrington had the better of the early exchanges without seriously threatening the Quins line. Apart from a Henry Paul penalty, the only moment of note in the opening half-hour was when David Howell was sin-binned for a late challenge on Michael Monaghan. But with half-time approaching, Haggerty intercepted Monaghan's pass to Chris Hicks and ploughed through the thick mud to score his first try for Quins under the sticks, with Paul adding the afters. Warrington upped the pace after the break piling everything into attack but it took until the last 15 minutes for Quins to finally crack, as Johnson twisted out of a tackle to spin over in the right-hand corner. Monaghan came close to a quick second try until another superbly-timed tackle by Paul, who was inspirational for the visitors. Harlequins got to grips with the conditions better than the home side, although the weather always had the upper hand on both sides. So it came as no surprise when a handling error caused what would have been Warrington's last scoring chance to break down, and the London side played out time for a deserved victory. Warrington head coach Paul Cullen: "We were simply very poor. Our handling was poor and our completion was absolutely awful - and we paid the price for it. "Unfortunately that was all we had left in us over the Easter period, but we're not going to blame fatigue. That was a poor performance. "Some of the mistakes we made were quite unbelievable. We lost our shape and we lost our structure - and from that we forced plays that were not working for us. We're very frustrated." Harlequins head coach Brian McDermott: "It was a tremendous effort. "We had a few of our leaders out, and our young boys did a really good job for us. The likes of Michael Worrincy, Will Sharp and Tony Clubb dug deep. "It was always going to be a tight game. I just thought we rolled our sleeves up and were prepared to get mucky."
