Castleford 31-34 Warrington

Super League

Castleford (12) 31
Tries: Westerman 3, Lupton, Owen
Goals: Westerman 5
Drop: Sherwin

Warrington (18) 34
Tries: V Anderson, Reardon, Westwood, Martin Gleeson, Mark Gleeson, L Anderson
Goals: Briers 2, Hicks 3

Louis Anderson's first try of the season secured victory for Warrington against a battling Castleford outfit.

It was cruel luck on the Tigers, for whom Joe Westerman scored a hat-trick of tries and kicked five goals.

Brent Sherwin looked to have won the game for Castleford after kicking a drop goal with three minutes left to put the home side 31-30 in front.

But brothers Martin and Mark Gleeson set up Anderson in the dying seconds to clinch the win for the Wolves.

The Tigers recovered superbly after going down 12-0 after 12 minutes thanks to tries for Ben Westwood and Stuart Reardon.

Warrington's Vinnie Anderson was sin-binned in the 23rd minute for holding down Kirk Dixon.

And the home side capitalised to level the scores with two tries in three minutes from Westerman, who added both conversions.

The visitors regained the lead on the stroke of half-time when Martin Gleeson went over from Westwood's pass and Chris Hicks added the goal.

But Castleford were level again when Ryan McGoldrick and Peter Lupton sent in Richard Owen, with Westerman adding the extras.

The game swung back Warrington's way when first Mark Gleeson and then Vinnie Anderson went over to give them a 30-18 advantage.

But Castleford struck back with two tries, Lupton finishing a cross-field move before Sherwin's long pass saw Westerman complete his hat-trick.

With seven minutes remaining, Westerman tied the scores at 30-30 with a penalty and Sherwin looked to have won it for Castleford with a 25-yard drop goal.

But then came Anderson's last-gasp score.

  • Warrington coach Paul Cullen

"We have had that sort of thing done to us so many times in the past, but there is a fair bit of football in our players and I was delighted with the way they held their nerve and came back.

"In the first 20 minutes we were in absolute contro,l but Castleford then made life difficult for us and their half-backs were very creative.

"We dealt with adversity very well today. We lost three players injured in the space of 60 seconds and it needs a fair bit of reorganising to keep your shape and structure."

  • Castleford coach Terry Matterson

"We were pipped at the post, but the effort from our guys was great.

"When you are at the bottom of the table it is a battle. We are down to the bare bones with our squad and everything is against us.

"I don't mind getting beaten in a fair way but that wasn't fair.

"I was pleased with the way our players reacted after half-time. I was disappointed for them because they are a hard-working group who deserved a result."
