Webster's late kick just made it over the bar |
Hull KR: (6) 11 Tries: Webster, Fitzhenry Goals: Cooke Drop-goal: Webster Hull: (0) 10 Try: Tickle, Yeaman Goals: Tickle
James Webster's 78th-minute drop-goal secured a dramatic victory for Hull KR over bitter local rivals Hull FC. Rovers took an early lead through Jake Webster's try, with the returning Paul Cooke kicking the extras. Daniel Fitzhenry went over in the second half to put Rovers 10-0 up, before Hull FC levelled with tries from Danny Tickle and Kirk Yeaman. But James Webster edged his side ahead late on with his scruffy kick which just scraped over the bar. | 606: DEBATE |
Much of the pre-match attention for the 203rd Humberside derby had centred on Cooke's return to action after the ban he received for his controversial transfer from Hull FC. But Cooke made a low-profile return from the six-week suspension, in a match which had to contend with high winds and numerous mistakes. The first try came after Shaun Berrigan lost possession after Scott Murrell's tackle and Jake Webster swooped on the loose ball and raced 35 yards to the line. Danny Tickle had levelled the score for his side |
Cooke converted from out wide, before Hull FC's Danny Washbrook spent 10 minutes in the bin for interference. Murrell thought he had taken advantage of his side's numerical supermacy only to see his score ruled out for obstruction by Chev Walker. The visitors fashioned a decent chance but Cooke hacking clear as Graeme Horne closed on Adel Fellous's kick ahead. Tickle missed the chance to narrow the gap after the break with his penalty from 20 yards out smacking back off the post. Rovers scored the next points though with Cooke and Jake Webster feeding Fitzhenry. Tickle crashed over to bring Hull FC back into the game, but he hit the post once again with his conversion attempt. Yeaman took Dykes's pass to score soon after and Tickle's conversion levelled the scores. But with the game seemingly destined for a draw, James Webster's late kick decided a tense match in Rovers' favour.
• Hull KR coach Justin Morgan: "Rarely in my time as a player or a coach have I seen a group so close-knit and focused on one goal.
"The desire this group has is unique. After the drop-goal (assistant coach) Lee Crooks said to me on the radio he hoped we didn't concede anything. "But then I looked across the line and saw in the faces of the people you work with every day expressions that just make you know that they're going with a fight." • Hull FC coach Peter Sharp: "I thought the team that kicked the ball the best would win and they did. Therein lies the story. I think we could be a bit smarter at times.
"It was a tight, tough, derby game. We just didn't kick the ball well enough in either half. It was hard to pass and we tried to pass our way out of trouble. That's rubbish. "I think we're getting better defensively, we just need to get smarter with the football. When we get Willie Manu, Garreth Carvell and Horne back you'll see it. "I can see a steady improvement week-to-week - we just need to get a couple of wins."
