Ryan Atkins bagged two tries and Danny Brough kicked 10 points as Wakefield held on for victory over Hull KR.

Atkins scored his first try from Oliver Wilkes's superb one-handed pass but Scott Murrell replied for Rovers after good approach work by Daniel Fitzhenry.

Brough's kicking set up a penalty try before Mick Vella followed up his own kick to score for the visitors.

Jake Webster's fifth try of the season put Rovers ahead, only for Brough to set up Atkins to score the late winner.

Hull KR coach Justin Morgan:

"I thought it was a very average game of rugby league. It was very scrappy and I don't think either side played anywhere near what they can.

"For us it was a brainless display at times and we had ample opportunity to put the game away and win the game but chose try move away from what we were doing well.

"We had ample opportunity to score points, plenty of points, but we were poor in our last play options in the first half and weren't asking enough questions.

"We didn't use out intelligence as well as we should have."

Wakefield boss John Kear:

"We have been criticised for some of our defensive work and we asked for the best defensive performance of the season.

"I thought the first half was controlled defence and I thought the second was just blood, guts and determination and character defence.

"But I didn't mean for them to lose the ball, throw silly passes and lose possession in their own 30 to have the best defence, so all credit to them.

"We worked hard and they have ground out a win, a win for character and determination more than anything else."
