Three tries in the last 16 minutes allowed St Helens to claw back a 12-point deficit and snatch victory over Wakefield at Knowlsey Road. Tries by Leon Pryce, Paul Wellens and James Graham for Saints were matched by Adam Watene, Sam Obst and Brett Ferres as the teams were level at the break.
Danny Brough's kicking set up Jamie Rooney and Sean Gleeson for tries as Wakefield went ahead after the restart.
But Gardner's brace and a second for Wellens made sure of the points.
St Helens coach Daniel Anderson:
"We were really sloppy and at times, we were just not in the game.
"We made a rod for our own backs, I can't explain it, it was one of those games. I'm happy to get the points.
"I thought Wakefield were very professional and came up with some classy finishing. They certainly made the most of their opportunities."
Wakefield coach John Kear: "The players dug in for each other, especially after going 12-0 down so early on, and
showed some character.
"The last try was fortunate to say the least. The ricochet could just as easily have gone into our hands instead of theirs and we would have been smiling and they would have been frowning.
"It was a good game for the neutrals but we are very disappointed - I thought we deserved something out of the game."
