King had already scored a try in the first half before his injury |
Warrington: (16) 32 Tries: V Anderson, King, Parker, Martin Gleeson, Johnson, Hicks Goals: Briers (4) Wigan: (4) 20 Tries: Colbon, Coley, Goulding, Hansen Goals: Richards (2) Australian Matt King was stretchered off as Warrington earned a bruising Super League win over Wigan. The centre was on the receiving end of a high stiff-arm challenge from Richard Mathers, who earned a red card. Tries by King, Vinnie Anderson and Rob Parker had put the home side in control with Liam Colbon scoring for Wigan. Martin Gleeson, Paul Johnson and Chris Hicks added to Warrington's lead, but Andy Coley, Harrison Hansen and Darrell Goulding restored some Wigan pride. After a disjointed opening period to the game, Vinnie Anderson opened the scoring with his third try of the season after slick handling by Michael Monaghan. Brother Louis Anderson was involved in the build-up to the second, his clever offload out of the tackle switching the direction of play and producing a gap in the defence for King to barge over. | 606: DEBATE |
Louis soon blotted his copybook, though, when he was sin-binned for holding on in the tackle, inspiring the visitors into a sustained assault. It looked like they had wasted their opportunity, until sloppy handling by Adrian Morley turned over possession and Trent Barrett set up Colbon to go over in the right-hand corner. Hicks looked to have added Warrington's third until a superbly timed tackle by Mathers and Thomas Leuluai barged him into touch as he was about to cross the line. Parker soon made up for this, powering over from close range after a superb kick to touch by Monaghan. And it was Monaghan who was at the centre of the action in the build-up to the King incident. He charged down Barrett's kick superbly and launched a counter-attack, off-loading to King, who was just getting into his stride when he was knocked out cold by Mathers. The injury held up play for several minutes, but it was Warrington who were quickest to regain their focus, with two tries in as many minutes by Gleeson and Johnson stretching them seemingly out of reach. Coley's try for Wigan gave them hope, but Hicks knocked any hope of a revival on the head when he mopped up after Lee Briers was held up short of the line. Goulding and Hansen scored late on for Wigan to ensure they went down fighting, but the damage done earlier on was too much to patch up. Warrington head coach Paul Cullen: "It was a really tough win and we're delighted with it. "We held our composure and our discipline sufficiently to control the game when we needed to." Wigan head coach Brian Noble on Mathers's red card: "It probably took the game away from us with that decision but I'm not complaining. "Richard has been in to see Matt King and apologised. He's a very clean player who has never been sent off before. "We gave ourselves too much to do but we didn't give in when we down to 12 men and 11 at one stage. You could see the effort and that is pleasing."
