Harrison Hansen's late try sealed Wigan's victory |
Wigan: (12) 28 Tries: Carmont, Goulding, Richards, Tomkins, Hansen Goals: Richards (4) Bradford: (8) 14 Tries: Godwin, Feather Goals: Deacon (3) Wigan condemned Bradford to their third Super League defeat in four matches in a hard-fought game in tough conditions. Wayne Godwin and George Carmont swapped early tries but bad weather made free-flowing rugby difficult. Tries either side of the break by Darrell Goulding and Pat Richards put Wigan in control. After a quiet spell Chris Feather's try put Bradford back in it but late scores by Joel Tomkins and Harrison Hansen secured the points for Wigan. The first half was evenly matched, but disrupted by too many penalties for off-side and interference. With Thomas Leuluai sin-binned and Wigan down to 12 men, the quick-thinking Godwin darted over for the opening try after the play-the-ball was moved close to the goal line for off-side. But straight from the kick-off, Michael Platt's off-load pass went between two team-mates and out or play, gifting possession to Wigan, and the resulting turnover allowed Trent Barrett to chip through for Carmont to touch down. | 606: DEBATE |
Richie Mathers almost gifted Bradford a try when he failed to control a probing kick along the touchline, but Paul Sykes, who was following up, seemed almost caught off guard by the Wigan player's error and fumbled with the line at his mercy. Just before the break Gareth Hock's incisive break saw him dummy Joe Vagana and burst through the Bradford line to launch a counter-attack, rounded off when Goulding slid over in the right-hand corner to score. Bradford's problems worsened after the restart when Vagana went off with a possible fractured forearm. And minutes later Wigan stretched their lead when Richards leaped above Sykes to claim Barrett's pinpoint cross-field kick and touch down. Bradford had been out of the match for some time until Feather twisted out of the tackle to score. But the try was soon cancelled out when Tomkins capitalised on a lucky deflection off Platt to score. The Bulls did their best to keep fighting to the end but when Shontayne Hape knocked-on just yards from the line with five minutes left, their last hope of a comeback was extinguished, and Hansen's last-minute try wrapped up the win. Wigan coach Brian Noble: "It was always going to be an arm-wrestle with these kinds of conditions. But I thought it was a good team effort. "In relation to our form, we have still got some way to go with the standards we have set for ourselves. "But it's good at this time of the year that you've still got those kinds of things to work on." Bradford coach Steve McNamara: "There are a couple of concentration issues there, but it's also the amount of errors we are making with the ball. "It's not too hard to fix, but we have got to fix it as soon as possible. "But, with the quality of the squad we've got and the number of games we have left, we'll be fine."
