Rob Purdham, David Howell and Matt Gafa all scored in an eight-minute burst as Harlequins beat Hull to secure their first win of the Super League season. Harlequins defended superbly to keep Hull at bay throughout the first half.
Chad Randall plundered from close-range for the Londoners' fourth try and Gafa crossed again before Shaun Berrigan grabbed a late consolation for Hull.
Harlequins' Scott Hill was stretchered off with what was later reported to be whiplash and could be out for a month.
Harlequins coach Brian McDermott:"We were quite prepared to come off second best if it meant we put in a good performance.
"Our defence kept them out when I didn't think we had the right to. It was heart-in-your-mouth stuff but it was also lump-in-your-throat stuff.
"I wasn't disappointed to let them in late and not keep a clean sheet. The main thing was the performance."
On Scott Hill's injury:"It's not a permanent injury, as was my fear. He'll be a few weeks. A bad case of whiplash is the first assessment, we'll see over the next couple of weeks."
Hull coach Peter Sharp:"We started poorly and made a series of unforced errors. It's hard coming back from 14-0 at the break but I thought we could if we did a lot of things right but we didn't do enough right.
"They (the fans) are entitled to their opinions and we certainly played poorly. They spend their hard-earned money to watch us in what is a working-class town.
"They're terribly supportive of us, so I won't say anything bad about them. But we are going through a tough patch and they need to be patient and their patience will be repaid I'm sure."
