Gateshead Thunder made a flying start to the Northern Rail Cup with Sunday's 24-16 win against York City Knights. Thunder were unfancied ahead of the game but were too strong for York and it was a good day for scrum-half Dan Russell who converted all four tries.
The game was soured by high tackles on both sides but Gateshead held on to secure all three points.
Next up for Dave Woods' side are fellow National League Two side Hunslet who lost 12-62 against Batley on Sunday.
