First Test - G Britain 20-16 N Zealand
Huddersfield, 27 October 2007

Great Britain coach Tony Smith was happy with his side's 20-14 win over New Zealand but admitted there was plenty for his players to work on.

"It wasn't sensational but we did a good job," Smith told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"We were a little rusty in a few areas. and we probably could have scored some more points. But it's probably good we finished with the scoreline we did.

"Let's not get carried away. We are happy to be one up in the series, but we need to tighten up in some areas."

The Lions should have won by more in the first of three Tests against Gary Kemble's Kiwis, wasting several golden opportunities to score.

"Some of our play was a little bit off," added Smith.

"We made a couple of breaks that we'd normally put to bed. We need to next time to make sure the scoreline isn't so close."

Adrian Morley did a great job for us, got us forward, got some quick play and allowed the half-backs to come in

Smith was pleased with the tryscoring debuts of Sam Burgess and Maurie Fa'asavalu at the Galpharm Stadium.

"To start your international career with a try is something special, they'll never forget it," said the Australian.

The only stain on Burgess's performance was a high tackle on Fuifui Moimoi that resulted in him being placed on report.

The Bradford prop will now face a disciplinary hearing this week.

Burgess and Fa'asavalu may have grabbed the headlines, but Smith was quick to highlight the contribution of others in the side.

"I thought Adrian Morley up front was outstanding," said Smith. "He did a great job for us, got us forward, got some quick play and allowed the half-backs to come in."

606: DEBATE

New Zealand coach Gary Kemble said Bradford winger Tame Tupou could now be a doubt for the rest of the series with a cruciate ligament knee injury. Epalahame Lauaki also suffered a strain.

Former Hull full-back Kemble said: "I was very impressed with our effort.

"We were down to 15 men in the second half but our commitment and focus was good. We lost our way a bit in the second half but I can't fault the effort."
