The 21-year-old, usually employed off the bench in place of veteran Keiron Cunningham, is the youngest winner of the award since Andy Farrell in 1996.

Roby is the third St Helens player in a row to win the award, following in Jamie Lyon and Paul Wellens' footsteps.

Saints' Daniel Anderson is coach of the year for the second season in a row.

Having been shortlisted for young player of the year 12 months ago, Roby was judged by a panel of experts to have made the greatest impact on the season.

Roby has only started 12 matches this season but has come off the bench to great effect, notably in the Challenge Cup final against Catalans Dragons when he became the first player to score a try at the new Wembley.

As well as Barrett, who gained some consolation by taking the Players' Player of the Year award, Roby saw off competition from the likes of Wellens and Leeds forward Gareth Ellis.

Bradford's 18-year-old forward Sam Burgess, called into Great Britain's training squad for the forthcoming Test series against New Zealand, was named Young Player of the Year.

Leeds were named club of the year and their centre Keith Senior received a special award for becoming the first player to play 300 Super League games.
