Leeds' Matt Diskin tries to get the ball away under pressure |
Leeds: (6) 6
Tries: Ablett
Goals: Sinfield
Hull FC: (10) 17
Tries: Godwin, Raynor 2
Goals: Tickle 2
Drops: Head
Hull put in a superb display to beat Leeds and deny them the Super League leaders' shield, secured by St Helens. In a tightly-contested encounter, it took Leeds half an hour to break the deadlock through Carl Ablett.
Wayne Godwin hit back quickly for the Airlie Birds and Gareth Raynor extended the lead via the video referee's decision just before the break.
Leeds fought hard but a Danny Tickle goal, Mathew Head's drop goal and Raynor's second try gave Hull the win.
It was a superb performance by the visitors, who had been humilated by city rivals Hull KR last weekend, and means that Leeds cannot catch Saints and also face a battle from Bradford to hold onto second place.
Leeds dominated the early exchanges but they were unable to find their way over the line and Hull gradually got into it although Garreth Carvell was placed on report after only two minutes for an off-the-ball challenge on hooker Matt Diskin.
A strong kicking game from both teams ensured play went from end to end, even if it remained scrappy, and it took almost half an hour for the first points to come.
Substitute Ablett scored with his first touch of the ball, following up Rob Burrow's kick, and Kevin Sinfield converted to make it 6-0.

But Godwin caught the Rhinos defence off-guard to force his way over and Danny Tickle levelled the scores before Raynor collected Head's kick and touched down in spectacular fashion.
Leeds thought they had equalised six minutes into the second half when Keith Senior touched down but the try was disallowed by video referee Ian Smith for an infringement by Gareth Ellis.
But Hull stepped up a gear and Head's kicking put pressure on the Rhinos and when the home side were penalised for not being square at the play-the-ball, Tickle extended their lead to 12-6.
Head inched his side closer to victory with a neat drop goal on 64 minutes before Raynor grabbed his second try deep into injury time.
Hull coach Peter Sharp "We were very committed, especially defensively. We were a bit patchy with the football at times.
"But to come to Headingley and get a result is a marvellous achievement, it just shows what commitment can do.
"It's been a long, hard week. We need to carry the same commitment into next week's game against Bradford."
Leeds coach Tony Smith "I'm frustrated more than disappointed. To dominate and be in control like we were in the first 20, 25 minutes and let Hull back in and take control was disappointing.
"It was one of those days when the ball doesn't stick and we became frustrated. That sometimes happens in sport. Anxiety set in and they got on a roll.
"We would have liked to have kept alive the possibility of first position but it's not to be. That's how the competition is, it's how tight it is."
