Bradford 16-16 Leeds
Super League

Bradford (8) 16
Try: Lynch, B Harris, Evans
Goal: Deacon 2

Leeds (0) 16
Tries: Penalty, Donald 2
Goals: Sinfield 2

A last-gasp try by James Evans gave Bradford a share of the spoils in a thrilling Super League Yorkshire derby against Leeds.

But Paul Deacon missed the conversion which would have given the Bulls a crucial victory.

Scott Donald looked to have secured the points for Leeds with two second-half tries, both set up by Danny McGuire.

But the Bulls rallied and Evans crashed over with less than two minutes to go to secure the draw.

Donald's efforts had looked to have spoiled the Bulls' hopes of celebrating the centenary of the Bradford club with a victory.

They were the better side in the opening half with Jamie Peacock forced into a try-saving tackle on David Solomona before Andy Lynch powered his way to the line past five defenders.

Deacon, returning to the side after a three-match absence, added the conversion and increased his side's lead to 8-0 25 minutes in after he had been tackled late by Gareth Ellis.

The Bulls defence held out until early in the second half when Matt Diskin had the ball taken from his grasp by Michael Platt in a two-man tackle and video referee Richard Silverwood awarded a penalty try.

Kevin Sinfield's goal cut the gap to two points but the home side responded immediately, with centre Harris touching down after winger Marcus St Hilaire collected Iestyn Harris' floated kick to the corner.

Nathan McAvoy tried to extend Bradford's lead but he was denied by the heroic Peacock.

Leeds hit back with Donald winning the race to McGuire's kick to the line for his first try, but Sinfield missed both the conversion and a subsequent 40-metre penalty.

With 10 minutes to go McGuire's high kick was fumbled by St Hilaire and Donald won the ball for the try which was awarded by the video referee.

Sinfield added the goal but Bradford made sure of the final say.

  • Bradford coach Steve McNamara (on Michael Platt's intervention in the award of the penalty try)

"If my full-back does not tackle the ball, he gets a roasting from me. He has to stop the try being scored.

"The player let go of the ball and Michael said if he had kept hold of it he would have slid his body underneath to prevent the try being scored.

"The rule is an absolute farce. What is he supposed to do?

"I thought we did enough to win the game. We had enough field position and enough possession but Leeds defended manfully."

  • Leeds coach Tony Smith

"It was a game of two halves. We got busted, out-wrestled in the first half but we did something about it in the second half.

"We stood up for ourselves and turned it around. Both teams defended well and showed a lot of desperation on the tryline."
