Huddersfield boosted their play-off chances with a hard-fought victory in testing weather conditions at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The lead changed hands several times in a see-saw first half before Kevin Penny's 37th-minute try sent the teams into the break level at 12-12.

Rod Jensen's interception try put the Giants in front and even Ben Westwood's hat-trick could not save the Wolves.

Warrington battled bravely, but Kevin Brown intercepted to kill off the game.

In conditions harking back to the pre-Super League era of winter rugby, both sides made plenty of mistakes but Warrington - who dropped to sixth place in the table - were severely punished.

At the end of the very first set, a 40/20 kick from Lee Briers, which was disputed by Giants full-back Paul Thorman, gave Warrington an early territorial foothold.

Ben Westwood was held up over the line, but it was a temporary reprieve with Henry Fa'afili darting over from dummy-half at the next play.

Warrington's Andrew Bracek knocked-on from the kick-off, and a few tackles later Hudson scored next to the posts after drifting past Paul Rauhihi and Paul Wood.

606: DEBATE

A clever run-around move involving Adrian Morley saw Westwood cross out wide for the next score, but Warrington's evening took a turn for worse when Wood had to be helped off with a suspected dislocated shoulder.

The influential Brad Drew put the Giants back ahead with a remarkably simple try, taking a straightforward pass and running past a series of static defenders.

Thorman missed a penalty after Morley was penalised for his second high tackle, but Huddersfield were in the ascendancy with replacement Robbie Paul controlling proceedings.

A delightful kick into space by Briers allowed Penny to score out wide, but the half-back missed his third conversion attempt to send the teams in level.

Warrington made an encouraging start to the second half with Rob Parker hauled down just short of the line by Stephen Wild, but seconds later Jensen gathered Mark Gleeson's pass and went the length the pitch to score.

Morley went in high for a third time to leave James Lolesi in a heap, and referee Richard Silverwood put the incident on report before Thorman knocked over the penalty to extend Huddersfield's lead.

Westwood got on the end of a flowing handling move to score his second, but Brown's interception of Briers's telegraphed pass ensured there would be no comeback for Warrington.

There was still time for Westwood to claim his hat-trick and knock over his side's first conversion of the match, but Thorman completed the scoring with a penalty after the hooter.

  • Warrington coach Paul Cullen:

"We got what we deserved. We scored five very good tries but our composure and discipline simply wasn't good enough," said Cullen.

"We surrendered the battle of field possession and played the game at the wrong end of the field.

"But it all pales into insignificance when we consider the injuries to Paul Wood. He has a very badly bust shoulder. The shoulder came out and we fear he broke it as well."

  • Huddersfield coach Jon Sharp:

"We're in good nick and have been for a long time, but we've got to crank up from this performance against Wakefield next week.

"Defensively we were fantastic but offensively we didn't have much to play with. It was a dogged performance."
