Fourth-placed Wigan closed the gap on Super League's pace-setters as their third win of the year over Leeds denied the Rhinos the chance to go top.

It was nearly an hour before Liam Colbon bagged the first try, after he was quickest to react when Brent Webb fumbled the ball over the goal-line.

Bryan Fletcher made sure of the points when he kept his feet despite two tackles to touch down by the posts.

Gareth Ellis's late sin-binning rounded off a miserable night for the visitors.

Two Pat Richards goals were all the sides could produce between them in the first half as slippery conditions made serious goal-line threats hard to mount.

Leeds full-back Webb was caught out by a couple of high balls and Wigan's Thomas Leueuai did his best to disturb the visiting defence, but without any joy.

Colbon looked to have finally produced the game's first try early in the second half, after a sustained period of Wigan pressure.

But as he found the narrowest of gaps on the right-hand side of Leeds' defence to squeeze through, he scraped the whitewash with his boot and the try was ruled out.

He was not to be denied his second chance, though, when he followed up after Webb slid and fumbled the ball over his own line.

Fletcher ensured the points for Wigan when he kept his feet and touched down for their second try late on, despite the best efforts of Webb and Jamie Jones-Buchanan to stop him.

"I was pleased with all aspects of our game.

"We looked very strong in defence and, when the conditions dried up in the second half, we looked threatening with the ball.

"We handled their threats really well. I thought we showed enough mettle and determination."

"The conditions were a leveller. It was always going to be difficult to score tries in those conditions.

"We had some field position early in the game but they defended really well throughout. So did we.

"Both teams were very committed to defence. Unfortunately, both teams left their attack at home.

"We made way too many errors, some uncharacteristic errors by some very good players. They are feeling pretty bad about it."
