Harlequins 30-22 Catalans
Super League

Harlequins: (18) 30
Tries: Paul (2), Gafa, Sheriffe (2)
Goals: Sykes (5)

Catalans: (12) 22
Tries: McGuire, Greenshields, Raguin, Bosc
Goals: Bosc (3)

Two second-half tries by Ricky Sheriffe earned Harlequins victory over the Dragons in the London sunshine.

Tries by Henry Paul (2) and Matt Gafa gave Quins an unlikely half-time lead, with Casey McGuire and Clint Greenshields replying for the visitors.

A lucky bounce saw Sheriffe score after the restart before Sebastien Raguin scored from Stacey Jones' high kick.

Thomas Bosc went over in the corner as the home side looked to be wilting, but at the death Sheriffe sealed victory.

The visitors dominated early on and it was no surprise when McGuire rounded off a good passing move to score.

John Wilson's poor handling with the line at his mercy let Quins off the hook as their appalling early defensive display continued.

Scott Hill's delayed pass set up Paul for a barely deserved equaliser, before more lax marking allowed Greenshields to restore the lead, rounding off a length-of-the-field move started by his own long sprint.

The Hill/Paul partnership produced Quins' second score and just before the break, Mark McLinden set up Gafa to score from nothing.

Sheriffe's disputed try after the restart, following more good work by McLinden, extended Quins' lead, but the visitors were given a lift when Raguin and Bosc touched down to rock the home side back on their heels.

As time ran out, the Dragons piled on the pressure, but on a rare break Sheriffe touched down to push Harlequins to safety.

  • Quins boss Brian McDermott:

"Rikki is ours now and we're pleased he is because he showed today what a good player he is.

"We knew what he could do when he came here and it was just a matter of asking him to prove his worth.

"He's done that, scored two good tries today and now we're seeing the kind of potential we all knew was there.

"Chad Randall was also fantastic and he is the leader of all my warriors. He gives his all and he'll work until the final whistle.

"We got tired towards the end but we dug in and got our reward."

  • Catalans boss Mick Potter:

"There are a lot of disappointed people in our dressing room and so they should be when you've been humiliated by the same team three times.

"We got down the right end of the field a few times but we couldn't apply any pressure and we came up with nothing which isn't good enough.

"Our kicking game was poor, our last-option game was poor and we'll have to address that quickly with the guys who are responsible for that.

"We conceded tries at bad times but there's no reason why we shouldn't have been able to come back. We just can't seem to beat Harlequins and now we've only got one chance left."
