Crusaders made light work of the muddy conditions in Bridgend |
Celtic Crusaders concluded their Northern Rail Cup group campaign as unbeaten winners of Group A with an 11-try demolition of St Albans Centurions in Bridgend. With an average of over 62 points per game, the Crusaders set the record for most points scored per match in a Northern Rail Cup group, beating Salford's 58 per game in 2003.
Carl de Chenu set the tone on a wet afternoon by running through for the opening try in the first minute.
Richard Johnson ran in for a second try straight from kick-off, with new signing Michael Hook converting again.
As the rain hammered down, conditions deteriorated and it took almost 20 minutes for the next Crusaders score, David Simm setting up Neil Dixon for a try in the corner.
Crusaders increased their lead again four minutes later after Karl Hocking caught a pin-perfect kick from Simm to touch down while Grant Epton ran in for Crusaders' fifth on the half hour.
Hook converted all three to keep up his 100% record.
Richard Johnson ran in with the try of the match on 32 minutes after receiving the ball in his own half and slicing straight through the defence, selling a couple of dummies on the way to score under the posts.
Crusaders managed one more try before half-time as Dixon ran in for his second on 36 minutes to put the internal score at 40-0.
Geraint Davies dived head first into a puddle following a grubber kick to score a minute after the break.
Epton brought up the half century with his second try on 44 minutes, while Dean Fitzgerald increased the lead further minutes later. Johnson converted both.
Substitute Lee Williams wrapped up the match, scoring the final try with two minutes remaining and man-of-the-match Johnson converting.
Said Crusaders Chief executive Chris O'Callaghan: "We're in top form at the moment and we need all Crusaders' fans to follow us up at Rochdale if we're to win next week and hopefully draw a Super League side in round five."
