Super League clubs and their National League rivals will be docked six points if they become insolvent, the Rugby Football League announced on Sunday. The rule, which takes immediate effect, aims to stop sides gaining advantage by unaffordable overspending.
"The game unanimously supports imposing a deduction which will address this imbalance," said the RFL's Nigel Wood.
Last season, London Broncos escaped punishment after going into liquidation with debts of 3m and then reforming.
Had they been dedcucted points, they would not have made the play-offs.
In addition, clubs in the top two competitions will be required to regularly demonstrate that their statutory financial responsibilities are being carried out with due probity.
"The new rules are intended to provide an early warning system in respect of clubs falling into arrears with their statutory obligations," said Wood.
"Whilst these new regulations cannot guarantee that clubs will never again face financial difficulties, at least they provide for the possibility of an earlier intervention."
