Wigan ended their losing run in Super League with a battling win at Widnes.

After a poor first hour Wigan came to life with three tries in a nine-minute spell from Terry Newton and Kevin Brown to secure victory.

Widnes had opened the scoring through a Stephen Rowlands try and Wigan did not take the lead until near half-time.

Widnes went in front again with two early tries in the second half and led 20-12, but Wigan then stepped up the pace to claim victory.

Widnes opened the scoring through Rowlands in the fourth minute and he added a penalty before Wigan got on the board courtesy of Bob Beswick, with Danny Tickle converting.

Rowlands added another penalty before Wigan drew level in the 30th minute when Martin Aspinwall collected a kick for his first try of the season.

A Tickle penalty edged Wigan ahead for the first time before half-time but after the break Widnes came out and seized control

First Simon Finnigan powered over and then Andrew Emelio crossed before a Rowlands penalty gave Widnes a 20-12 lead.

Newton then sparked the Wigan revival with their third try and they took the lead when Brown crossed for a converted try.

Five minutes later Brown went over again and a further Tickle penalty made it safe for the Warriors.

Vikings boss Frank Endacott felt his team did not deserve to lose.

"I just felt so upset for the lads that they've put an effort in like that and haven't got the result," he said.

"I thought we had them, but there was just a couple of telling moments where penalties were given that got them right back into the game.

"Whether that was our bad discipline or not, we paid the consequences."
