Folkes fear over player burn-out
Canterbury Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes
Steve Folkes, coach of Australian champions Canterbury Bulldogs, fears an annual Tri-Nations competition could force players into early retirement.

The Rugby League International Federation want the event to continue.

But Folkes feels that puts top players under too much pressure and says it should only take place bi-annually.

"Both physically and mentally (an annual series) might shorten the guys' careers - and shorten them significantly," he said.

Folkes, whose side will travel to Britain to face Leeds in the World Club Challenge in February, added: "International football is extremely important to our game and everybody that plays footy - that's their ultimate goal to play for their country.

"But if you want these internationals to be around in four or five years' time then you've got to take a step back and assess how draining all this is."

Folkes is one of several Australians to cast doubt over the wisdom of an annual series, despite the Kangaroos' emphatic win in this year's competition.

Aussie skipper Darren Lockyer also expressed concerns about the length of time spent away from home after his side's crushing 44-4 victory over Great Britain in Saturday's final at Leeds.
