Wigan Warriors have confirmed they are interested in signing controversial Australian centre Mark Gasnier.

His NRL club St George Illawarra have said they will honour a commitment to release the 22-year-old from his contract if he decides to join Wigan.

"Mark would be a fantastic acquisition, but we'll have to see what happens," said Wigan caretaker coach Denis Betts.

Gasnier hit the headlines when he was dropped from the New South Wales State of Origin team for improper conduct.

The Dragons fined him heavily for making a lewd phone call to a woman during a team bonding session.

He took time off earlier this season amid speculation he was ready to retire from rugby league.
