And Aberavon Fighting Irish, runners-up last season, won a tense encounter at Newport Titans 32-22.

The first half, that ended 20-18 in favour of the away side, was a classic with the lead changing hands three times before the Fighting Irish finally took control.

Man-of-the-match Dean Scully completed the scoring for Aberavon late in the game after David Dyer, Simon Bailey, David Hawkins, Paul Morgan and Lian Gudd (with a brace) had already got on the score sheet.

Newport fought back with tries from Ross Palmer (2), Richard Davies and Mark Wheeler.

The Irish next face Swansea Valley Miners who will look to pick themselves up from their heavy loss to the Bulls.

With the scores tied 10-10 at half-time, the Tigers blitzed the second half.

The Demons' consolation tries came from new boys Gareth Edwards and Gwion Bowen.
