Cardiff Demons staged a second-half comeback against Coventry |
Cardiff Demons warmed up for their inaugural season in the Welsh Conference with a 36-32 pre-season friendly win against Coventry Bears. Demons, last season's South West Conference champions, snatched victory with a try in the last minute through player-coach Wayne Williams.
Bears led 26-6 at half-time with Scott Clendenning-Fenton, Tim Stevens, Mark Hyslop (2) and John Nicholls scoring.
But Demons fought back for a first win at their new home in Taff's Well.
Bears, who play in National League Three, dominated the first half and outscored their hosts by five tries to one, with winger Idris Evans the sole scorer for Cardiff.
But the Demons came out reinvigorated for the second half and Mark Dando began the fight-back four minutes after the restart when he went over from short range.
Martin Thomas brought the score back to 14-26 on 50minutes and Graham Hughes finished off a fine move four minutes later to take the Demons to within eight points.
With 16 minutes remaining, Demons worked the ball first left and then right before Martin Thomas ghosted through to score under the posts.
Demons finally took the lead 11 minutes from time with a Rhodri Thomas try converted by Gareth Jones for a 30-26 advantage.
But Bears recaptured a 32-30 lead with a fine try from Clendenning-Fenton, his second of the match, converted from the sideline.
As the clock ran out, Demons had a prolonged period of pressure on the Coventry line and Williams barrelled over on the last tackle to claim the win.
The Demons play Torfaen Tigers at home on Sunday 2 May in their opening league match.
