I have been thinking a lot about Friday's World Club Challenge between St Helens and the Sydney Roosters. That is because each day that passes is another day closer to the end of our own reign after last year's win over Newcastle Knights. I am obviously a little disappointed the Bulls will not be able to defend their crown at Bolton's Reebok Stadium.
But St Helens beat us in the Super League Grand Final, so I can have no complaints. I will probably be at the Reebok Stadium to see the game - and for one day only, I will be supporting Saints. If they play to their potential, they will be very hard to beat. In fact, I think they will win - and win comfortably. The Roosters are a top side but the odds are stacked against them. They are playing on foreign soil, are a long way from home and will be up against a very partisan crowd. But they are taking the game very seriously, which is a good sign.It proves the competition is gaining more and more recognition and means a lot more to Australian clubs these days. After victories for Saints and Bradford in the last couple of years, I think the Aussie press has been giving the NRL clubs a hard time. So the Roosters will be keen to head home with the trophy. The Bulls have got a couple of weeks off before the start of the Super League VIII. But we are in good heart after our Challenge Cup win over Warrington. It was a real dogfight at Wilderspool. It is a tough place to go and the fans are very vocal but our players stayed composed.
There is a lot to improve on, don't get me wrong - and the plan is to work hard on our offensive play this week but we have got to be happy with our performance. The draw has been good to us as well. I thought we would end up playing another Super League side, but we've been paired with Hunslet, who upset Huddersfield. We will treat Hunslet with respect but at the end of the day, we are going to make sure they have a very tough day at the office. I can understand why the Hawks have switched the game - they have done what they think is best for them. But I don't think it makes much difference where we play them. Wherever the game takes place, we will be prepared. | See also: 05 Feb 03 | Rugby League Top Rugby League stories now: Links to more Rugby League stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
