Saints sign Bulldog Smith
Darren Smith, about to sign for St Helens
Smith can play row forward or centre
Super League champions St Helens have signed veteran Australian Test player Darren Smith from Canterbury Bulldogs.

The older brother of Hull loose forward Jason, Smith has signed a one-year deal as a replacement for compatriot Peter Shiels, who has announced his retirement.

The versatile Smith, 33, who can play back row forward or centre, played 272 first-grade games for Brisbane and Canterbury and was a regular for the Queensland State of Origin team.

He has also made 11 appearances for Australia.

"We had to get a quality replacement for Peter and, after having a good look around, decided that Darren would be ideal for us," said St Helens coach Ian Millward.

"He's an outstanding player and he's had an absolutely brilliant season. Age is no reflection on the way he plays. A few Australian clubs were showing an interest in him."

Smith will arrive in England on 2 January and is expected to play in Saints' World Club Challenge against Australian champions Sydney Roosters in February.
