Rudman was suffering from the effects of a virus in America

Britain's Shelley Rudman finished second in the 2008-9 skeleton World Cup series after the eighth and final round in Park City in America.

The Olympic silver medallist came eighth in both the seventh round on Wednesday and in the final round.

Rudman had been top of the World Cup leaderboard but was battling a virus as Germany's Marion Trott took a second and a first to win the World Cup title.

Fellow Briton Amy Williams came fifth overall after a final fourth place.

Rudman was looking to add the World Cup crown to the European Championship title she won in St Moritz last month.

She said: "A virus has wiped me out for the last few days so considering that, I'm really happy to have come second overall this season.

"I've been really happy with my technology programme and the support I've received from my sponsors this year."

Dr Andy Schmid, GB Performance Director, said: "I'm absolutely happy with two girls, they've done a great job. They're both strong and fit, and I'm looking forward to their results at the World Championships."

Kristan Bromley was Britain's highest placed finisher in the men's race, coming joint 11th. Ant Sawyer came 16th and Andy Wood 17th.

The result meant Bromley finished the World Cup series ninth overall with Sawyer 13th, and Wood 20th.

Russia's Alexander Tretiakov won his second race in successive days to ensure he claimed the 2008/9 Skeleton World Cup series title.

Park City hosted the final two rounds of the World Cup after an earlier event in the season was cancelled in Cesana, Italy.
