Vonn hopes her injury will not prevent her skiing on Saturday

Lindsey Vonn will miss Thursday's giant slalom at the World Ski Championships in Val d'Isere after cutting her right thumb while opening a champagne bottle.

The American, who sustained the injury while celebrating winning the women's downhill and super-G, underwent surgery to repair a damaged tendon on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old, who leads the overall World Cup standings, hopes to enter the slalom on Saturday wearing a splint.

"I'm still quite sore. We'll see if I'll be able to start," she said.

"I have to take into consideration my whole season. For me it's also the overall World Cup standings that is at stake."

Vonn suffered the injury when she grabbed a bottle which had a severed edge after being opened with the edge of a ski when the cork broke.

Wednesday's team event in Val d'Isere was cancelled following a snowstorm.
