Riesch's career has been hampered by injuries |
German all-rounder Maria Riesch's hopes of racing at the Turin Olympics are all but over after she injured her knee. She fell awkwardly midway through her second run of Saturday's World Cup giant slalom in Aspen, Colorado, and is to have surgery back home in Munich.
Riesch, the winner of three World Cup races, was rated Germany's top medal hope in the 2006 Olympic ski events.
The 21-year-old missed much of last season with knee and shoulder injuries, stalling her promising career.
In the previous season, she won World Cup races in three different disciplines - downhill, super-G and slalom.
The injury is another blow to Riesch's career and to the German team who have already lost veteran Hilde Gerg.
She retired last month after hurting her knee during training for the new season.
