Passing the torch from Jordan (left) to Kobe |
Kobe Bryant turned in one of his most dominant displays on Friday to help the LA Lakers beat Michael Jordan's Washington Wizards 108-94.
In what is almost certain to be the final NBA meeting of two basketball legends, Bryant put on a shooting clinic, scoring eight-of-11 three-point attempts en route to 55 points.
Jordan, who has said he will retire for good at the end of the season, had no answer to his 24-year-old rival, finishing up with 23 points.
During the game a fan waved a sign that read: "Goodbye Michael, hello Kobe."
And, by the end, it appeared that a torch had been passed from Jordan to the NBA's new elite, of which Bryant is a leader.
It was fun to be out there on the floor with him for one last time |
Bryant's points haul was the biggest in the NBA this term, but afterwards he chose to pay tribute to his childhood basketball hero.
"It is always fun to play against Michael because I have so much admiration for him.
"He has taught me so much and it was fun to be out there on the floor with him for one last time."
The Wizards must now win some games if they are to give Jordan the farewell he deserves in the NBA play-offs.
In other action, Earl Boykins scored 10 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter to lift the Golden State Warriors beat the Philadelphia 76ers 102-98.
Allen Iverson had 28 points and 10 assists to lead the 76ers, who have lost two in a row at home.
