Nikolai Khabibulin notched up his 29th career shut-out as Tampa Bay beat the New York Rangers 3-0 in Florida. The Russian stopped 24 shots as the Eastern Conference-leading Lightning continued their hot start and moved into a tie for first place overall in the NHL standings. Khabibulin now has a 10-game unbeaten streak (8-0-2) dating back to last season and has not lost in nine games this year. Tim Taylor put Tampa ahead in the first period before Fredrik Modin and Vincent Lecavalier scored late in the third to seal the win. Martin St Louis had two assists for the home team, giving him 15 points this season. Panthers beat Stars Mike Richter made just 18 saves in goal for the Rangers. Bobby Holik sat out his second straight game with a knee injury. In Dallas, Valeri Bure scored with 3:21 into overtime, and back-up goalie Jani Hurme made 42 saves as Florida beat the Stars 3-2. Brenden Morrow's shorthanded goal with 8:52 remaining in normal time lifted the hosts into a 2-2 tie. The Stars outshot the Panthers 44-13, 13-0 in the third period and 5-1 in overtime, but went down to their first home loss of the season.
