Lightning strikes Rangers
Tampa Bay Lightning's Tim Taylor
Tim Taylor gave Tampa the lead

Nikolai Khabibulin notched up his 29th career shut-out as Tampa Bay beat the New York Rangers 3-0 in Florida.

The Russian stopped 24 shots as the Eastern Conference-leading Lightning continued their hot start and moved into a tie for first place overall in the NHL standings.

Khabibulin now has a 10-game unbeaten streak (8-0-2) dating back to last season and has not lost in nine games this year.

Tim Taylor put Tampa ahead in the first period before Fredrik Modin and Vincent Lecavalier scored late in the third to seal the win.

Martin St Louis had two assists for the home team, giving him 15 points this season.

Panthers beat Stars

Mike Richter made just 18 saves in goal for the Rangers.

Bobby Holik sat out his second straight game with a knee injury.

In Dallas, Valeri Bure scored with 3:21 into overtime, and back-up goalie Jani Hurme made 42 saves as Florida beat the Stars 3-2.

Brenden Morrow's shorthanded goal with 8:52 remaining in normal time lifted the hosts into a 2-2 tie.

The Stars outshot the Panthers 44-13, 13-0 in the third period and 5-1 in overtime, but went down to their first home loss of the season.

Kristian Huselius had a goal and an assist for the Panthers, while Ivan Novoseltsev got their other goal.

Wednesday's NHL results:

Carolina 4-2 NY Islanders
Ottawa 1-4 Pittsburgh
Tampa Bay 3-0 NY Rangers
Washington 2-7 Boston
St Louis 7-0 Nashville
Dallas 2-3 Florida (OT)
