Toronto Maple Leafs' Alexander Mogilny
Mogilny scored twice for Toronto
Thursday's NHL results

The Toronto Maple Leafs opened their National Hockey League season with a 6-0 hammering of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday.

Mats Sundin and Alexander Mogilny both scored twice, and Sundin also had two assists as the Maple Leafs coasted to victory before just 15,309 fans.

It was the worst opening-night loss in the history of the Penguins.

Mario Lemieux and the Penguins had nine powerplay opportunities but could not generate many good chances as Ed Belfour picked up the shutout by making 33 saves in his Maple Leafs debut.

Mogilny opened the scoring at 5:30 and Sundin followed with another goal just over three minutes later.

Mogilny scored the only goal of the second period and third period markers by Sundin (the 399th of his career), Karel Pilar and Nikolai Antropov completed the rout.

In Calgary, Alberta, Dan Cloutier made 19 saves as the Vancouver Canuks beat the Calgary Flames 3-0.

Brendan Morrison, Bryan Allen and Markus Naslund scored first-period goals for the Canucks.

Morrison opened the scoring at 11:28, speeding down the left wing and snapping a shot through goalie Roman Turek's legs.

Cloutier's shutout was the ninth of his career.

Thursday's NHL results:

Buffalo 5-1 NY Islanders
Columbus 2-1 Chicago
Ottawa 1-2 New Jersey
Pittsburgh 0-6 Toronto
Florida 3-4 Tampa Bay (overtime)
St Louis 3-4 Anaheim
Calgary 0-3 Vancouver
