Gretzky tribute opens season
Gretzky in action for Canada in 1998.
It will be the third time Gretzky's 99 has been retired
The NHL begins its new season Wednesday by retiring ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky's famous number 99.

It will happen during a game between his former team, the Los Angeles Kings, and the Phoenix Coyotes - the franchise he now owns.

The ceremony, in which Gretzky's shirt will be raised to the rafters of LA's Staples Center, will mark the third time that "The Great One" has had his number retired.

The holder of every meaningful NHL scoring record, including most points, goals and assists, Gretzky had his number retired by the League in 1999, shortly after he ended his 20-year career.

Edmonton, where Gretzky won four Stanley Cups before being traded to LA, have also bestowed the honour on the nine-time league MVP.

Crack down

Gretzky played for the Kings from 1988 to 1995, raising the sport's profile in the United States.

In other opening night games, losing Stanley Cup finalist Carolina host the New York Rangers, while the Colorado Avalanche will take on the Dallas Stars.

The Detroit Red Wings open the defence of their Stanley Cup crown on Thursday when they travel to San Jose to face the Sharks.

Fans will notice several changes from last season.

In an effort to make the game more exciting, the NHL has ordered officials to crack down on illegal tactics such as hooking and interference, freeing the game's most talented players to display their skills.

The NHL has also ordered all 30 teams to install protective netting in every arena.

The decision to string safety netting behind both goals follows the death of 13-year-old Brittanie Cecil last season after she was struck by a deflected puck.
