Yankees edge out Padres
Jason Giambi hits out for the Yankees
Giambi doubled in the first inning for the Yankees

Left-hander Ted Lilly tossed a three-hit shutout to help the New York Yankees record a 1-0 win over the San Diego Padres.

In his first start since 8 June, Lilly (3-5) walked two and struck out a career-high 11 in the first shutout of his career.

He received all the help he needed when Jason Giambi doubled in the first inning off hard-luck loser Jake Peavy (0-1) to score Alfonso Soriano.

It was one of only three hits allowed by Peavy, who went six-plus innings in his major league debut.

The game was played before a crowd of 60,021, the biggest in the major league this season.

In Los Angeles, Shawn Green belted his 22nd homer of the year to guide the Dodgers to a 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

In San Francisco, 30-year-old rookie right-hander Travis Driskill took his record to 5-0 as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Giants 4-2.

In Montreal, the Expos's eight-game winning streak was snapped by the Cleveland Indians, who rode the right arm of Bartolo Colon to a 5-4 victory.

Colon (10-4) worked eight innings, scattering nine hits, then watched while reliever Bob Wickman nearly gave it away in the ninth.

In Philadelphia, the Minnesota Twins saved their best for last, getting three runs in the 11th to defeat the Phillies 4-1.

In Milwaukee, the Anaheim Angels recorded runs in six of the first seven innings to beat the Brewers 8-2.

In New York, Raul Ibanez knocked in four runs to send Kansas City to a 5-1 win over the Mets and to snap the Royals's eight-game losing streak.

In Cincinnati, the Oakland Athletics made it 14 wins in 15 games with a 10-3 rout of the slumping Reds.

In Denver, the Colorado Rockies strung together three consecutive homers to get on the board and a single in the 11th inning give them a narrow 6-5 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
