Brownlee earned a maiden victory in Madrid on 31 May

Britain's Alistair Brownlee secured back-to-back series victories by taking the ITU World Championship event in Washington DC on Sunday.

Brownlee, who claimed a maiden victory in Madrid on 31 May, led from start to finish in the American capital.

The 21-year-old finished ahead of defending world champion Javier Gomez of Spain and Germany's Maik Petzold.

"It was a hard race, a windy bike and I really had to push on the run to get rid of the other guys," said Brownlee.

"I kept looking behind me on the run and they were still there, and finally on the last lap they weren't," added the reigning under-23 world champion.

For Gomez it was his second podium finish of the series having come third in Madrid.

American duo Andy Potts and Hunter Kemper finished just outside the podium places in fourth and fifth after racing with the lead pack the entire race.

Briton Will Clarke finished 10th, while victory for Brownlee moved him to the top of the championship rankings after three of eight rounds.

"It was great to have another good result at a world championship race," added Brownlee.
