Twelve teams will qualify for the London 2012 men's water polo tournament, while the women's Olympic event will feature eight teams.
The top-ranked nation from water polo's 2011 World League will qualify for the men's event, to be joined by top three teams (excluding the World League winners) from the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai.
Five more teams come from each of the five continental championships, with Britain already handed the European continental quota place as the hosts.
That leaves three places to be decided at an Olympic qualification tournament early in 2012.
Women's qualifying is a cut-down version of the above, relying on the continental championships to supply five teams (with Britain again already guaranteed the European place) and an Olympic qualifier adding the remaining three.
British water polo has secured a host nation berth in the Games for both the GB men and the women.
That said, their participation relies on the British Olympic Association giving the teams the green light to compete.
The BOA has previously said it must be satisfied that teams will be competitive before allowing them to take up their places, and the men's team in particular are understood to be under scrutiny.
