Watch Tom Daley's six dives How qualification works: | KEY DATES: DIVING JULY 2011 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, China FEBRUARY 2012 Diving World Cup in London |
The Olympic qualification criteria for diving have not been officially released, but it is anticipated that qualifying will begin with the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, China. The 12 finalists in each individual diving event (men's and women's 3m and 10m platform) will earn Olympic places for their country, as will the top three finalists in the 3m and 10m synchro diving events for both genders. Phase two of qualification is the 2012 Diving World Cup in London, where 18 more semi-finalists from each of the individual events, plus the top four synchro teams in each event (excluding those who qualified at the Worlds) will be added to the Olympic start list. How are British competitors doing? Tom Daley is far and away Britain's best-known diver, but he was bested by veteran Pete Waterfield in 2010's National Cup, so there is plenty of competition within GB for places on the 2012 team. The indication is that British divers are guaranteed a berth in the synchro diving events as hosts, but that this does not apply to individual events. However, this has yet to be confirmed by world governing body Fina.
