Davies has struggled to produce his best form this year |
Olympic silver medallist David Davies faded after a strong start and came 30th in the 10km open water event at the European Swimming Championships. The Welshman led for most of the race on day one of the Hungary championships but fell back late on and was last of the three British swimmers to finish. Daniel Fogg came 11th in one hour 54 minutes and 40.2 seconds while Richard Charlesworth was 27th at Lake Balaton. Thomas Lurz of Germany won the race to secure his fourth European 10k crown. Davies, who withdrew from the British Championships 1500m freestyle in April because of fatigue, was making his return to competition. | 606: DEBATE |
He looked on course for a medal after leading for much of the race but could not sustain the pace over the last 2km and eventually finished in the pack in a time of 1:58.21.4. Team leader Mark Perry said: "The race was a tough one in a quality field and for us we can take many positives from these results. "For Dave to return to action and lead for 8km is very positive. Although he hit a wall, we know where he is now and where he needs to be to gain success." The women's 5km race was won by Ekaterina Seliverstova of Russia in 1:02:34.7. Pool swimming events start in Budapest on Monday.
