Davies is competing in four events at the World Championships in Rome
David Davies was last in the swimming World Championships 400m freestyle, but still hopes to make his mark in Rome.
The Olympic and world championship medallist Welshman, 24, will also contest the 1500m plus the 800m.
But Davies says his proudest moment will come on Friday when he takes part in his fourth event - the 4x200m relay.
"I can't imagine a greater honour than lining up alongside three of your close mates... and racing together as part of Great Britain," Davies told BBC Wales.
"They've also got a really good chance, they're always up there or thereabouts in the medals, so it's going to be a fantastic race.
"I haven't been part of the relay since I was a junior swimmer, which was about seven years ago."
Davies finished the 400m final in three minutes, 47.02 seconds and although he is excited at the opportunity and the camaraderie of the relay in Rome, the Barry-born swimmer is remains focussed on his specialist distance of 1500m.
Davies has toyed with the idea of specialising in the 10km open water for the 2012 Olympics in London if that offers him the better chance of a gold medal.
But he is still confident that he can become the world's best over his preferred 1500m distance.
Davies has won three bronze medals in the 1500m freestyle at Olympic and world level as well as a silver in the 10km open water at the last games in Beijing.
"After Beijing I changed a lot of things in my training and I tried to get a bit stronger and a bit quicker," added Davies, speaking to The Back Page programme.
"I'm doing these 400 and 800 distances now to improve the speed on my 1500 as well, so they're all relevant and I like to pit my wits against the rest of the world and see where I am in those terms.
"There's a couple of events I don't normally do, the 1500 is obviously my main event - that's going to be on the last day.
"The 800 is not an Olympic event but it's in the World Championships so... hopefully I can do well throughout the week."
