Welsh swimmer David Davies holds the 800m and 1500m British record |
David Davies lowered his own British 800m freestyle record as he won the Scottish National Championships. The Olympic silver medalist broke the 800m national record at last year's meet and this year Davies secured a new mark of 7 minutes, 50.49 seconds. However, the Welshman said: "I was looking to get a quicker time, but I am feeling tired through my training. "The energy just wasn't there. To get a record always give you a buzz but I wanted to go faster here." Davies holds the British 1,500 and open water records as well as the top 800m national mark, swimming an perfectly timed race in Glasgow as the 24-year-old dominated from 100m out. Davies, who won Olympic open water silver in 2008 and Olympic 1500m bronze in 2004, said: "Everyone in distance swimming is going really fast and they have moved the events on massively. "My preparation is making sure this is something I will be doing in 2012. It is all geared towards that goal. "The 800m event isn't a certainty for me in Rome. I am going to sit down tonight and consider options. "The dilemma is it isn't an Olympic event and I don't want it to impact those that are." Daniel Fogg, who just missed the qualification time for the 1,500m Freestyle, swam a strong race as he also lowered the English record with a time of eight minutes 00.18 seconds. Swansea swimmer Gareth Keating secured bronze with a time of eight minutes and 14.58 seconds.
