Matthew Clay came third in the 50m backstroke behind German winner Helge Meeuw and Greek Aristeidis Grigoriadis.

Kristopher Gilchrist finished fourth in the 200m breastroke but took bronze, with Pole Slawomir Kuzcko winning gold ahead of Italian Paolo Bossini.

Italy's Loris Facci finished first but was disqualified for a one-handed touch on his second turn.

Scotland's Gilchrist said: "At 150m I just felt I had nothing left but I dug in to try to finish strongly.

"I gave it everything and I was very happy to see I'd been promoted after the winner was disqualified."

Clay was less happy with his third place, saying "I could see I was ahead at 25m so I suppose I'm a little disappointed with bronze.

"But a European medal to go with Commonwealth gold has exceeded my expectations for the year."

In other events, Germany set a new world record in the women's 800m freestyle relay.

Their quartet of Petra Dalmann, Daniela Samulski, Britta Steffen and Annika Liebs finishing in seven minutes, 50.82 seconds.

The previous record was held by the United States with a time of 7:53.42, set at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The British women's quartet of Mel Marshall, Jo Jackson, Fran Halsall and Caitlin McClatchey set a new British record of 7:57.86 to finish fourth.

France's Laure Manaudou struck gold in the 100m backstroke and 200m medley to add to the 800m freestyle crown she won on Wednesday.
