Welsh seals third Shanghai gold
Matthew Welsh
Welsh also won the 100m backstroke on Thursday
Australia's Matthew Welsh added the 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly titles to his 100m backstroke victory at the World Short-Course Championships.

Welsh won the backstroke in 23.53 seconds from Germans Thomas Rupprath (23.70) and Helge Meeuw (24.01).

He then edged Ukraine's Sergiy Breus and Brazil's world recorder holder Kaio Almeida in a tight butterfly final.

The Netherlands set a new world record of three minutes 33.32 seconds to win the women's 4x100m freestyle event.

Fittingly, with the championships being staged in Shanghai, it was China's record of 3:34.55 set in 1997, that they broke. Australia (3:34.95) were second, and Sweden took bronze.

Tara Kirk of the US won the women's 100m breastroke with a new championship record time of one minute 5.25 seconds.

Suzaan Van Biljon of South Africa (1:05.6) claimed second, with Jade Edmistone of Australia (1:06.08) third.

Qi Hui gave the home crowd something to cheer about, winning the women's 200m individual medley for her and her country's second gold of the event.
